I've always found those third-person bios, clearly written by the author, a little off. So here are a few thoughts on who I am. At the moment, anyway.

First and foremost, I'm a father. Almost everything I do comes back to making life more fun, more interesting, and where possible more secure, for my little one. She's curious, sharp, and has a cheeky sense of humour.

She also has the blessing and curse of growing up in what may come to be called the AI Epoch. She'll never know a world without the models, tools and agents now emerging.

And as someone born before the World Wide Web existed, in an era when home and school computers ranged from 16K up to the dizzying heights of the Commodore 64's 64K, I can safely say I'm her favourite dinosaur.

The internet was transformational. But there's something seismic about the AI revolution we're watching unfold day to day.

Work that once took a human tens or hundreds of hours can now be done in minutes, often more accurately. Thanks to the sheer volume of training data fed into the current crop of Large Language Models, the question of "what?" is a prompt away.

In a society where what we do makes up so much of who we are, handing knowledge work to language models, agentic workflows and deterministic systems will be a destabilising force. And that's before we get to the implications of an ever-larger share of the workforce being replaced by tools, systems and agents. What's clear is that the technology is outpacing legislation, policy, and society's ability to keep up.

It's this threshold I'll be writing about: as a parent with a child growing up in this new world, and as a futurist and sci-fi fan finally able to talk to a computer the way fictional heroes and villains have for decades.
